Who is Ms. May?

Hello! My name is Ms. May and I am your part-time counselor here at Martinez! I will be here Monday, Wednesday and every other Friday to assist Ms. Davis, who will still be here every day. We have the unique task of building important life skills that are essential to learning, solving problems and getting along with others. One of my main focuses is teaching resilience to set our students up to be successful in all areas of their lives!

What does a school counselor do?

In our school counseling program we collaborate with students, faculty and parents to promote success for all of our students. We focus on academic, personal/social and career development so students can acquire skills to be successful both in and out of the classroom.

This year we will pull small groups and individuals to focus on acquiring coping skills to overcome challenges such as anxiety, family changes and getting along with others. We are lucky to be able to get to know so many of our students and be a safe place they can go when they need help!

Furthermore, we assist families by providing school supplies-we have various donations so please email me jennifer.may@ccboe.net or Ms. Davis rochelle.davis@ccboe.net if your child needs anything! We work closely with our school social worker, Erin Gilstrap, to help families with community resources. Please contact us if your family is in need of extra food or holiday assistance in December. We participate in Food 4 Kids as well as The Columbia County Foundation for Children holiday assistance program.

Also, Ms. Davis coordinates and manages gifted testing. Gifted testing is conducted twice per year. Fall gifted testing is conducted for referred new students only (which includes new 1st through 5th grade students entering into the county). Spring testing is conducted for all referred K-5 students who have not been tested within the last 2 years.

Please don't ever hesitate to contact us when you have questions or concerns about your child! We look forward to a great school year!
